For more than 40 years, Sonic has worked to build its dominant position in the drive-in restaurant business and create a franchise system that offers extraordinary entrepreneurial opportunities in the quick-service restaurant industry. Sonic Drive-Ins offer made-to-order sandwiches and feature signature items such as Extra-Long Cheese Coneys, hand-battered onion rings, tater tots, and a variety of Frozen and Fountain Favorites, including cherry limeades, slushes, and a complete soft-serve dessert menu. At a typical Sonic Drive-In, the customer drives into one of 24 to 36 covered parking spaces and orders made-to-order food through an intercom speaker system. The customer's order is delivered by a carhop usually within four minutes. For a number of years, Sonic has consistently maintained strong real sales growth and industry-leading customer frequency.

2 cups white cornmeal
4 cups Crisco cooking oil (or enough for your personal fryer)
2 quarts ice water, divided

Watermelon Limeade

Makes 1 quart

flesh of a 5 pound watermelon, cubed, seeds removed
1/4 cup lime juice, from 3 to 4 limes
2 tablespoons agave nectar

In two batches, pulse the watermelon cubes in a blender just until it looks like a chunky sauce, about 10 to 12 short pulses. Transfer pulp to a colander lined with cheesecloth set over a large pot, stirring occasionally until most of the liquid has dripped through. Transfer 3 1/2 cups of liquid to a large pitcher and reserve remainder for another use.

Add lime juice and agave nectar to pitcher and stir to combine. Refrigerate until completely cool. Serve in ice filled glasses, garnished with lime zest or rings if desired.

1 (19 oz.) can mild plain chili, heated
3 cups Fritos corn chips
1 cup mild cheddar cheese, shredded
1/4-1/2 cup onion, diced, to taste
4 large burrito size flour tortillas

Mix Fritos with chili, place 1/4 of chili mixture in the middle of the flour burrito shell. Sprinkle chili with 1/4 cup shredded cheese and diced onions to taste. Fold one side of shell halfway on top of chili. Fold each side over each other. The bottom should be tucked in and filling will be seen from the top of wrapped shell. Heat in the microwave 15- 20 seconds.

House Burger

Sonic Copycat Recipe

Serves 1

1/4 lb ground beef
1 large plain white hamburger bun
melted butter
ground black pepper
2 teaspoons mayonnaise
3 hamburger pickle slices
1 tablespoon chopped white onion
1/3 cup chopped lettuce
2 slices tomatoes

Shape the ground beef into a thin circle the same diameter as the bun. Cover the patty with wax paper and freeze it. When you're ready to prepare the burger, preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Spray some butter spray or spread a thin layer of melted butter on the faces of the top and bottom bun. Lightly brown the faces of the bun in the skillet, then remove them and set them aside. Grill the beef patty in the skillet, and lightly sprinkle it with salt and pepper. Cook the beef for 3 to 4 minutes per side until done.

As the patty cooks, build the burger by first spreading the mayonnaise over the browned face of the bottom bun. Arrange the pickle slices on the mayonnaise. Sprinkle the chopped onion over the pickles. Arrange the lettuce on the sandwich next. Stack the tomato slices on the lettuce. When the beef is ready, stack it on top of the other condiments, and top off the sandwich with the top bun. If you'd like the sandwich hotter, microwave it on high for 10 to 15 seconds.
